I know my family likes to give advice, and Will and I are at a stalemate. Jason has lately started to suck his fingers all the time. We really don't want him to do this and are trying to break him of this bad habit.
I slap his hand, but sometimes he thinks it is a joke when I am running after him. He also tests me and sticks his fingers in his mouth right next to me to see what I will do. I am consistent and slap his hand. Other times he will just go into another room and suck his fingers where I won't see him. Oh and if I catch him with his fingers in his mouth, sometimes he pretend that he was going to show me his "tee"th and says it.
Will wants to put soap on his had so that he will stop. I am not a fan of that idea, especially because it might get on the couch and stuff. So both of our plans have flaws and we can't think of other ideas. Any other ideas you have would be great.
Last night Steph, Bobbie, and I went to a "How to hold a cookie exchange class." I really just wanted to get out of the house and to eat the cookies, but we ended up taking away some great ideas from the class. I think we are going to end up holding one. The lady was super fanatical about the parties that she holds. From what she was telling us she spends at least a hundred buck on the invites and parting gifts. That doesn't include the money she spends on the food, her own cookies, prizes, and games. And also the rules, and how many cookies you had to make (7 dozen, yikes that's a lot of cookies!) Wow she really likes her cookie parties. They do sound pretty cool though.
We tried out a different macey's this time and the lady was so much nicer. We were loud as usual and at the end Bobbie even over heard her saying that she liked us 3. I think we will have to go to that macey's a lot more. Plus I won the drawing, and Steph won a jar of cookie mix for winning a game. We all had a blast. Such a spur of the moment class we went to, but I am glad we went.

Okay, first off my boys sucked their thumbs, and I really didn't like it. However, I knew they would stop once they were 'razzed' a couple times from friends or they out grew it. As long as Jason isn't sucking on his fingers when his adult teeth come in-there will be no permanent damage to his adult teeth. Okay with that being said...my girlfriend wrapped tape around her son's fingers and he stopped!
It sounds like the cookie class was fun! It also sounds like your teacher was paaionate about making the cookie exchange great-$100 on invites? WHOA! ;)
Just to be clear on the soap idea, I just want to take a Q-tip and put a couple dabs on the fingernails of his two favorite finger. I actually think it's so un-extreme, it might not work.
Hummm...I only had one thumb sucker, Colton and he didn't stop until the dentist told him to when he was three. He came home, cut the string off his blanket and stopped sucking. Interesting story.
I do like both tape and soap ideas. In fact, I've tasted soap under my fingernails, after I've washed my hands....yuck!
From a pharmacist's point of view, there is a product called Thum that you paint on kids fingers and thumb to help stop thumb suckers. I think it dries on the fingers. It is bitter but safe to put in the mouth.
Our orthodontist suggested socks over the hands and wrist and safety pinned to the sleeve. This was mostly for at night in bed.
Commenting on Rachel's product THUM, I think it should be re-named THUCKKKK!
Kristin, you're gonna have to teach me about the cookie party. YOu know I can use all the help I can get in that area! mieka
I think the Thum thing may work. He also probably wanted extra attention from mom and dad or he is testing them. I assume postitive reinforcement would get good outcome too.
